The Origin of Silent Night! Holy Night! (Stille Nacht! Heilige Nacht)

The origin of the famous christmas carol “Stille Nacht! Heilige Nacht!” reaches back to a small parish in Austria more than 200 years ago. The pastor Joseph Mohr wrote the text of “Silent Night” in the form of a poem. In the fourth stanza he expresses the urge for peace in insecure times. His previous place of employment, Mariapfarr in Lungau, Austria, had suffered from the withdrawal of the Bavarian occupation troop after the Napoleonic Wars and the following Congress of Vienna, which partly reorganized the state borders of Europe. Two years later, Franz Xaver Gruber composed the soothful melody for the poem. Mohr and Gruber sung it for the first time at Christmas Eve 1818 in St. Nicholas Church in Oberndorf near Salzburg: Mohr in a Tenor and Gruber in a Bass voice, accompanied only by Mohr with his guitar. From there, the triumphant procession of “Stille Nacht! Heilige Nacht!” began within Europe, to America and the rest of the world.
